Impressed current cathodic protection

While modern hull paints provide some protection against corrosion, they do not offer a complete solution. For this reason, most operators choose to protect their vessels with a purpose-designed impressed current cathodic protection system.

Llalco’s cathodic protection hull corrosion protection (ICCP) systems reduce maintenance costs by preventing corrosion on vessel hulls and marine structures. We offer the world’s leading Llalco ICCP technology, installed on more than 21,000 vessels, combined with a comprehensive understanding of corrosion problems and the most effective way to solve them.

The problem

Corrosion on the wetted surface of the hull, propellers and rudders is inevitable despite the advances in the paints applied to the hull of ships. From the very moment the hull comes into contact with seawater, galvanic corrosion starts to occur on the hull surface, due to imperfections in the paint, pores, and other causes that lead to the formation of galvanic micro-cells in the hull steel that cause corrosion.

Problem and Solution

The Solution: cathodic protection

Llalco has developed a range of impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems for vessels of all types.

Using an arrangement of hull mounted anodes and reference cells connected to one or more control panels, the system produces a more powerful external current to suppress natural electrochemical activity on the wet hull surface. This eliminates the formation of aggressive corrosion cells on the hull surface and avoids corrosion problems due to galvanic couple or proximity to other components such as propellers.

The introduction of the Llalco range of anodes offers numerous advantages in terms of high performance and ease of installation. These anodes are lightweight, diver replaceable and produce high performance with virtually no footprint.

Whatever the vessel, Llalco can provide the ultimate in effectiveness and reliability to combat hull corrosion with cathodic protection based systems.

An essential feature of the ICCP systems is that they constantly monitor the electrical potential at the seawater/hull interface and carefully adjust the output to the electrical potential.

By installing a Llalco system, operators can make significant savings in hull maintenance costs, as well as achieve reductions in fuel consumption by having a smooth hull surface. In addition, the system will safeguard the owner’s investment and ensure greater safety through increased hull integrity.
